Auto accidents can happen without warning when we are driving on the road. Choosing the right coverage's to protect yourself and your family can be an important decision. What does auto insurance cover?
Auto insurance is designed with some basic things for your protection subject to the policy limits of the coverage and terms/conditions of the auto insurance policy you purchase from an insurance company.
Liability Protection - Your liability coverage generally covers damage to others in an at fault accident. The first part of this coverage is called Bodily Injury Liability Coverage. Bodily injury coverage is designed to pay for injuries or death of the driver or passengers injured if you cause an accident while driving your vehicle.
The second part of your liability protection is called Property Damage Liability Coverage. This coverage protects you from having to pay for damage to another person's property (i.e. their car) when you are responsible for an accident. It also covers your legal defense if another party files a lawsuit against you.
Most insurance companies will allow you to purchase liability protection as a Split Limit coverage or a Combined Single Limit coverage. In a split limit coverage your limits are specified as to how much money will cover Bodily Injury Liability and how much money will cover Property Damage. For example a limit of 100/300/100 would mean you have $100,000 dollars per person up to $300,000 dollars per accident for bodily injury coverage and $100,000 dollars for property damage liability coverage. In a combined single limit policy you would receive the specified amount for all coverage's together (Bodily Injury & Property Damage liability coverage). So a policy that states $300,000 CSL means you have $300,000 dollars to pay for bodily injury and property damage for an at-fault accident.
Without the proper liability limits to cover the property damage and/or injuries you have caused in an at fault accident, you run the risk of a judgment against you in a lawsuit jeopardizing your personal assets. This is why the auto liability limits you choose on your policy is an important decision to consider. Ask yourself, what do I stand to loose if I cause an accident while driving? This coverage helps protect your investment for all those unpredictable elements that can spring up on or off the road minus your deductible.

It only applies to medical expenses of the injured driver and passengers in your car. It does not cover property damage.
